When looking for fragrances to enhance your space, many of us immediately think of candles and the gorgeous ambiance they provide along with the aroma, but did you know that wax melts are also an excellent way to add fragrance to your home without the flame? Wax melts (also known as tarts) is one of the fastest growing segments in the home fragrance market and they are the perfect way to complete your Simply Vela fragrance collection.
What Are Wax Melts?
Wax melts are scented pieces of wax, much like what is in your candle jar, just without the wick. Here at Simply Vela, we use a different kind of wax for our melts than we do in our candles, so the melts hold their shape better in our gorgeous succulent molds. Our wax melts come in different sizes and give off a mild scent right out of the package; however these wax melts are designed to be slowly warmed in a tart or wax warmer (we recommend a tealight warmer for optimal scent throw).
How To Use Wax Melts
If using an electric warmer, place your desired amount of melts into the bowl of the warmer (we recommend starting with 2-3 pieces to gauge how strong you'd like the scent), then simply turn your warmer on. As the wax melts, fragrance will be released into the air, filling your space with beautiful aroma.
Another option to melt your wax tarts, is to use a tealight warmer. Tealight warmers can be made from ceramic, glass or metal and work very similarly to an electric burner except your heat source comes from a tealight candle placed inside the warmer. We prefer the use of tealight warmers with wax melts as the scent throw is enhanced and stronger vs using an electric warmer.
What Makes Wax Melts Different From Candles?
Wax melts allow you to get creative with your home fragrances. You can easily experiment with combining two or more different scents to come with a custom fragrance. For example, you could combine a piece of Fresh Linen wax melts with a piece of Cactus & Sea Salt wax melt to create your own signature scent. When using Simply Vela wax melts you are not limited to using only one fragrance at a time, so get creative and have some fun mixing wax melts to come up with your own custom fragrances.
How Long Do Wax Melts Last?
"Fragrance throw" is the term given to gauge the strength of scent released from wax melts and candles. Fragrance throw is grouped into two categories: “hot” and “cold” throw. “Cold throw” is the release of fragrance when the wax melts are at room temperature, not yet warmed, and solid (i.e., just out of the package). “Hot throw” is the release of fragrance once the wax melts have been warmed. Generally, the difference between hot and cold throw is classified in terms of the strength of scent and also in terms of the character of the scent.
Here are a few things that can affect how long your wax melt scents last:
- Type of warmer used - The hotter your wax warmer gets, the more intense your scent will be, however this means the wax melts will have a shorter life span since the aroma will be released faster (i.e. Tealight Warmers). Similarly, if you have a wax warmer that is colder in terms of warming temperature (i.e. Electric Warmers), it will release a milder hot throw, but the scent will last for a longer period of time.
- Wax-to-Fragrance Oil Ratio - Typically, most candle companies use 1 oz. of fragrance oil per 1 lb. of wax. That’s about a 6% fragrance oil concentration. Here at Simply Vela we use a different type of wax for our melts that allow us to have a 12% fragrance load, which equals a much stronger scent.
- Storing Your Wax Melts - The way you store and care for your wax melts can directly affect their character, duration, and scent throw. To ensure that you get the most out of your wax melts, make sure you store your wax melts in a cool, dark place. Some great storing options could be in a bathroom cabinet above the sink or in a drawer most convenient to your warmer. Avoid exposing your melts to direct sunlight for an extended period, as this exposure to heat will begin to affect the fragrance binding to the wax.
What Makes Simply Vela Wax Melts Different?
Not only do we utilize a special wax that allows us to have a 12% fragrance load (versus the industry standard of 6% - 8%), we only use all-natural soy wax for our melts. Most wax melts are made with paraffin wax, which is a petroleum based product that can cause headaches and release toxins into the air, in addition to not being a renewable resource. Always opt for all natural soy wax as it burns cleaner and lasts longer.
Additionally, we color our wax melts with a hint of dye (its very concentrated, so a little goes a long way) and mica powder. Mica is a natural stone mineral with shiny flakes. When mica is ground into a powder, you get mica powder. Mica powders are sparkly, sort of like very fine glitter. They’re used to give a metallic or shimmery pearl-like effect. When you first open your package of Simply Vela wax melts, the shimmery goodness of the mica powder is not yet noticeable, but once you melt the wax, you can see the gorgeous shimmer move around the warmer bowl. Its quite entrancing!
