The Perfect Farmhouse Decor: Dough Bowl Candles
Simply Vela Candle Co. owner & founder Noell Garza, is always researching new candle ideas and trends in the industry and when she came across these little beauties', she knew she had to learn more. If you've been curious about our Dough Bowl candles (or even skeptical, dare we say?) keep reading as we share what we've learned and how to properly care for these gorgeous candles.
Our dough bowls are hand-carved and made to look like the perfect rustic farmhouse bowl. Some may have knots, holes, knife marks, minor cracks, or sap marks. These are a natural part of a bowl that has been made from raw wood. This makes each bowl unique with its own character. Size, color, and shape may vary.
What is a Dough Bowl?
A dough bowl is made of wood and provided a snug, warm place in which bread could rise prior to baking in colonial America. Today they are used for home décor. The bowls can be hung on the wall, displayed on a table filled with seasonal touches, or used as a vessel to make a candle.

How safe are Dough Bowl Candles?
As with all candles, our Dough Bowls are safe to burn as long as you are aware of and follow the Federal Warnings and burning instructions that are included with all of our candles and wax melts.
Check out our Candle Care Guides to learn more about Federal Warnings and burning instructions. The wicks of our candles do not come into contact with the vessels themselves, as the heat of the wick is what melts the candle wax and releases the gorgeous Simply Vela fragrance.
Does Simply Vela spray any of the Dough Bowls with fire retardant?
In preparation for pouring candles into these beautiful vessels, Simply Vela Candle Co. does spray the exterior of the wooden dough bowl with a fire-retardant spray. We do not spray the interior of the dough bowl as we want to keep our soy wax as natural as possible to provide you with the cleanest burn possible.
Though we do take the extra measure of applying fire retardant to the exterior of our Dough Bowls, care still needs to be taken to ensure you have a safe candle burning experience. Candles should never be left unattended or near any other flammable object(s).
Candles should always be kept on a level, fire resistant surface and not burned for more than 4 hours at a time. For additional safety care instructions, check out our Candle Care Guides.

Are Simply Vela Dough Bowls completely watertight?
We cannot guarantee 100% watertightness of the bowl; however, rest assured Simply Vela tests each and every bowl for watertightness before we pour wax into it.
We recommend you place your Dough Bowl candle on a fire-resistant surface that can also handle any wax clean up that may be necessary.
What is the burn time on a Dough Bowl Candle?
Because dough bowls are hand carved the exact dimensions, and amount of wax each holds will be slightly different. Our 3-wick bowls hold approximately 13 oz. - 16 oz. of wax and have an approximate 40-50+ hour burn time. Our 5-wick dough bowls hold approximately 25 oz. - 42 oz. of wax and have an approximate 70-80+ hour burn time. Our single wicked Cheese Mold Bowls hold approximately 7 oz - 9 oz of wax and have an approximate 50-60+ hour burn time.
Remember to burn your candles for 4 hours at a time to enjoy them safely and get the most out of each candle.
What can I do with my Dough Bowl once the candle has finished?
